Sight words are words that are instantly recognized by sight rather
than by sounding out. They may be high-frequency words or words that
do not comply with standard phonetic pronunciation; most sight words are
function words within a sentence. Sight words make up 50-89% of our
everyday reading and conversations. In order to achieve reading fluency
and comprehension, students must attain ample sight word recognition beginning
in kindergarten. Sight word lists have been developed in order to support
young readers in the emergent reading process.
Teachers and parents can assess students’ sight word recognition in order to determine ways to address their individual needs. Drill and practice, both at school and at home, can help students become fluent readers of sight words. Students who read fluently are more likely to comprehend the text because they don’t have to stop to attempt word attack strategies. Ample sight word recognition empowers students to feel successful about reading. Listed below are the current kindergarten sight words: |
